Retail Closures Week of August 15–21, 2026: 1,489 Events — Our Largest File Yet, Plus a New Asset Sales Calendar

Store Closure Watch logged 1,489 closure and distress events for the week of August 15–21, 2026 — 1,319 closures, 95 bankruptcies, 52 layoffs, and 20 restructurings, up 255.4% from last week's 419. The jump is coverage, not a closure wave: the pipeline now expands company closure lists and filings to the individual location, adding roughly a thousand address-level records and putting Rite Aid's 116-store list, all 72 Amazon Fresh and Go stores, and Save A Lot's seven Chicago stores in the file with addresses. Subscribers also get a new Asset Sales Calendar of court-verified bankruptcy sale events.

UPDATE: The Largest Weekly File We've Published, and a New Asset Sales Calendar

This week's file is three and a half times normal size after we implemented a new data enrichment method. Roughly two-thirds of the 1,489 records didn't come from news coverage. They came from company closure lists, court documents, and state and federal filings that our pipeline now reads directly and expands to the individual location through new research and verification methods. When a company announces closures as a list, every store on that list enters the file as its own record with its own address. A Save A Lot announcement covering seven Chicago stores, for example, is seven rows with seven addresses. Our new data sources and integration methods resulted in the addition roughly a thousand address-level locations this week.

That expansion is also why this week's file carries 116 Rite Aid locations (52 of them in Pennsylvania), the full 72-store Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go shutdown with addresses, 22 7-Eleven closures, and 16 West Marine stores. Some of these closures happened months ago. They're in this week's file because this is the first week they exist anywhere as a single address-level list, which is the whole point of the SCW datastream.

Two honest consequences from these improvements: First, the week-over-week number (up 255% from 419) is a coverage jump, not a closure wave. Second, the early-warning flags in the subscriber watchlist are calculated on news-reported closures only, so a large list arriving in one week doesn't register as an industry speeding up. On that basis one industry flagged this week: grocery, at 31 news-reported closures against a weekly average of about 10, with Kroger's closure program, Amazon's exit from physical stores, and a run of independent grocers all landing at once.

We also launched a new product this week: an Asset Sales Calendar, built for liquidators, auction buyers, and equipment and fixture dealers. It lists court-verified sale events in active bankruptcy cases (sale motions, bidding procedures, auctions, sale hearings, purchase agreements), with the stage each process has reached, what that stage means for anyone looking to buy, and the number of locations for that company in the weekly file. This week's edition covers six active sale processes, two of them with court dates still ahead: Poolin Technology's sale hearing in September and Rogue Ales' private-sale hearing later this month. The other four, including Omnicare's purchase agreement, have reached court approval, which is when leftover inventory, equipment, and rejected leases become available. Every row had to pass a two-part identity check (docket number and case name both matching the company record) before it could appear. The same workbook carries three more tabs for disposition buyers, each labeled by what backs it: 49 disposition-relevant dated facility closures in the next two weeks with goods and on-site assets, 78 inventory and asset sales reported as running or scheduled in the last two weeks, and 22 motor carriers that handed back their federal operating authority in the last two weeks with fleets of five or more trucks. Subscribers receive it with the weekly file, and it's available on its own for $30 a month; a sample copy is available on request.

The Big Story

Grocery is the week's largest single-industry closure story, and it comes from three directions at once. Kroger's closure program produced Harris Teeter closures in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., plus a Fred Meyer closure in Tacoma (172 jobs, WARN-filed). Amazon's exit from physical grocery, all 72 Fresh and Go stores, shows up as a complete list for the first time, concentrated in California (21), Pennsylvania (12), and Illinois (10). And the independent and regional layer is where the jobs are: O'Brien's Market in Modesto (117 jobs), Roth's Fresh Market in Oregon, Acme Fresh Market's two Ohio closures, and Piggly Wiggly stores in six Southern states.

The second story is with pharmacies. Rite Aid's 116 records this week are the liquidated chain's store list landing in the file with addresses, which matters less as news (the closures are known) than as inventory: Pennsylvania alone gets 52 address-level vacancies in one file, with California (21), Oregon (12), New York (8), and Washington (8) behind it.

Bankruptcies, at 95 records, are the week's third thread, and they skew toward restaurant franchisees and operators rather than brands: Quality Fresca, the Moe's Southwest Grill franchisee (603 jobs across Florida, Virginia, and Georgia); Sailormen, the Popeyes franchisee; Mad Fitness Group, an F45 franchisee closing studios in Miami and Atlanta (156 jobs); Fazoli's under the FAT Brands case; and Saks Global, which announced a filing. Among non-restaurant cases, BFG Supply, a horticultural distributor, filed with three owned and sixteen leased facilities going to market, and the Boatworks Mall and Inn at Lake Tahoe filed to stop a foreclosure auction.

Sector Breakdown

  • Retail — 601 events. Rite Aid (116), West Marine (16), GameStop (8), and a long tail of independents, with the bank branch closings from federal filings continuing in the background at near-zero press coverage.
  • Restaurant & Food Service — 239 events. KFC (19, twelve of them in Florida), Pizza Hut (18), Papa Murphy's (13), Wendy's (7), and the franchisee bankruptcies above. Flavor Hills closed all four of its restaurants in North and South Carolina and continues as catering only.
  • Office & Services — 132 events. Blueprint Medicines in Cambridge, Massachusetts (229 jobs), Samsung's U.S. headquarters move out of New Jersey, and 80 Acres Farms' headquarters closure as its vertical-farm wind-down finishes.
  • Grocery & Convenience — 126 events. Amazon Fresh and Go (71 combined), Harris Teeter (7), Grocery Outlet (7), 7-Eleven (22), and the regional grocers in the Big Story.
  • Industrial & Manufacturing — 96 events. Frito-Lay's Orlando plant (454 jobs, WARN-filed), Anchor Glass in Warner Robins, Georgia (168 jobs), Mission Foods' Pueblo tortilla plant (100 jobs), Ardagh Group in Lincoln, Illinois (150 jobs), and Gerresheimer's glass packaging plant in Vineland, New Jersey (139 layoffs running through mid-2027).
  • Healthcare — 159 events. Florida and Texas facility closures from state license records — home care agencies, hospices, and clinics that never make the news — make up most of it; the University of Vermont Health Network closed a cytogenetics lab and a family medicine clinic.
  • Logistics & Warehousing — 46 events. HelloFresh's Atlanta facility (727 jobs), CJ Logistics America closing its largest Lehigh Valley warehouse in Pennsylvania and a Fontana, California site, and IPS Express Logistics in Carson, California filing for bankruptcy (132 jobs).

Notable Individual Events

  • UPS — nationwide. Announced 30,000 layoffs, the largest workforce figure in this week's file; facility-level detail will follow through state WARN filings.
  • Frito-Lay — Orlando. Plant closure, effective, 454 jobs, WARN-filed.
  • HelloFresh — Atlanta. Facility closure, effective, 727 jobs.
  • Quality Fresca (Moe's Southwest Grill franchisee) — Florida, Virginia, Georgia. Chapter 11, confirmed, 603 jobs, with leases being rejected at 16 locations.
  • Fred Meyer — Tacoma. Closure, effective, 172 jobs, WARN-filed, part of Kroger's closure program.
  • Anchor Glass Container — Warner Robins, Georgia. Closure, effective in October, 168 jobs, WARN-filed.
  • Blueprint Medicines — Cambridge, Massachusetts. Closure, confirmed, 229 jobs, WARN-filed.
  • Chalone Vineyard production facility — Sonoma County. Closure, confirmed, 290 jobs, WARN-filed, under Jackson Family Wines.
  • Save A Lot — Chicago. Seven South and West Side stores identified as at risk of closing unless the operator finds a new investor. They're carried as threatened rather than confirmed, and they're the clearest example of what the location-level expansion adds: seven addresses from one announcement.

Methodology

Store Closure Watch records are automatically extracted from company announcements, WARN notices, court dockets, state license records, federal filings, and news coverage, then audited with an independent verification pass and cross-referenced against state WARN filings before publication. Three hundred two of this week's records carry WARN filings and 95 are bankruptcy events. Every record carries a source link and confidence flag, and each weekly file contains only events newly identified that week; re-coverage of previously reported closures is deduplicated against our full history. Public roundups report chain names and city or metro areas only; street addresses, coordinates, and per-record source links are available to subscribers. Learn more about how the data pipeline works.

Figures reflect the dataset as of August 23, 2026, following weekly deduplication and quality review.
