Store Closure Watch logged 646 closure and distress events for the week of August 29 – September 4, 2026 — 557 closures, 45 bankruptcies, 30 layoffs, 8 restructurings, 1 conversion and 1 relocation across 542 distinct businesses, down 16.6% from last week's published 775. Restaurant chains led again at 221 events, and this week the pattern is chains closing single locations rather than one big filing: Denny's dropped six restaurants from its own locator in one week, five of them around the Twin Cities, and Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Lobster and Pizza Hut each shed a handful. Simmons Bank was the week's most frequent name at 13 records, from a 26-location program disclosed in a September 3 securities filing, and our early-warning system flagged healthcare at 20 news-sourced events against a trailing average of about 9.

Chains Shrink Location by Location, and Healthcare Flags Again

This week's file holds 646 closure and distress events across 542 businesses, down 16.6% from the 775 published last week. 86 records carry WARN filings and 45 are bankruptcy events. The decline is smaller than it looks: last week's figure included 93 Florida licence-record candidates that this week's count excludes (see the Data Update below).

The Big Story

Restaurant chains lead again at 221 events, and this week the pattern is chains closing single locations rather than one big filing. Denny's appears 7 times, six of them restaurants that dropped off the chain's own store locator in one week, four in the Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs, one across the river in Hudson, Wisconsin, and one on the south side of Indianapolis, with no closure announcement behind any of them. Behind it, Buffalo Wild Wings (5), Red Lobster (3) and Pizza Hut (3) keep trimming, Fuzzy's Taco Shop's Houston-area franchisee closed a group of stores, and Bua Food Group will close three Las Vegas restaurants, Lotus of Siam among them, at the end of October.

Next was the banking sector, with the biggest story being Simmons Bank, the week's most frequent name at 13 records. In a September 3 securities filing the company said it will close 26 locations; the ones located so far are in Arkansas and West Tennessee, with the Arkansas branches closing December 4. Add the routine branch closings we pick up from federal filings, JPMorgan Chase, PNC, Columbia Bank and Fidelity Bank among them, and Office & Services runs at 31 news-sourced events against a trailing average of about 22.

Healthcare tripped the sector flag this week: 20 news-sourced events against a trailing average of about 9, and a broader mix than one system's cuts. MultiCare will close five Rockwood clinics in Spokane County by year end, affecting 83 staff and providers. Crothall Healthcare will lay off 545 at VCU Health in Richmond on October 31, WARN-filed. John Muir Health, Stanford Health Care and HCA Healthcare all filed layoffs, Penobscot Community Health Care in Bangor is closing its adult wellness center, and Intermountain Health is closing its Lewistown, Montana clinic. The flag is a coverage signal, not a count of hospital closures, but it is holding.

• Retail, 216 events. The Safeway in Indianapolis, GameStop and Lululemon single closures, Raley's in Brentwood, California, and West Marine's bankruptcy records in South Carolina.
• Industrial & Manufacturing, 60 events. Tyson Foods again: Joslin, Illinois (2,500 jobs) and Eagle Mountain, Utah (723) both WARN-filed. JBS's Souderton, Pennsylvania plant, where slaughter ended August 14 and about 1,085 of 1,485 jobs go as the site converts to packaging, Kellogg's Omaha plant (450), Del Monte in Washington (499), Freightliner's Portland truck plant (387), Georgia-Pacific Gypsum in Tacoma (125) and Autokinition's Detroit stamping operation, which appears five times under one notice.
• Office & Services, 52 events. Bank branches as above, plus MLive Media Group ending print editions of eight Michigan newspapers on December 6, from the Ann Arbor News to the Saginaw News.
• Logistics & Warehouse, 26 events. Above its trailing average at 17 news-sourced events. Do it Best is consolidating distribution centers in Kingman, Arizona, Springfield, Oregon and Montgomery, New York (the former True Value center, about 300 jobs). Essendant's Atlanta center (192 jobs), ThriftBooks in Halethorpe, Maryland (136) and CJ Logistics in University Park, Illinois (89) are WARN-filed, and ten small carriers surrendered federal operating authority.
• Hospitality & Entertainment, 10 events. Two Tukwila, Washington card rooms, Great American Casino and Riverside Casino, close November 1 with 238 jobs on WARN notices; Buffalo Bill's and Whiskey Pete's in Primm, Nevada closed July 4 (344 jobs).

Data Update

The Closure Candidate status we introduced last week now has a tighter definition. A Florida licence record becomes a candidate only when two things are true: the state's current licence file shows no active licence for that operator at any address, and the facility is a physical location such as a clinic or assisted living home. Licence changes that fall short of that, an operator re-licensed under a new type, a move to a new address, a successor at the same address, or a home-services registration that was never a storefront, are useful signals in their own right, and they now go to the subscriber Watchlist as administrative filings rather than into the closure counts.

Two things change for readers. Candidates no longer count toward the public weekly figure, so this week's 646 is confirmed events only. And candidate records carry no closure date, because the state publishes none; subscribers see the date we detected the licence change instead. Last week's post stands as published, and this week's comparison is against that figure.
