CJ Logistics America is closing three warehouses in Illinois and Pennsylvania

CJ Logistics America is the contract logistics arm of South Korea's CJ Group. It is based in Des Plaines, Illinois. This summer it filed three plant-closing notices covering 202 jobs.

The first notice went to Illinois on July 10. It closes the University Park distribution center in Will County, about 35 miles south of Chicago. The company laid off 59 people on September 4. It will lay off 18 more on October 3 and the rest by October 30.

The second notice went to Pennsylvania in August. It closes the company's largest warehouse in the Lehigh Valley, the Allentown-Bethlehem region of eastern Pennsylvania about 60 miles north of Philadelphia. The building is nearly 1.2 million square feet on Nestle Way in Upper Macungie Township, west of Allentown. The layoffs run from October 16 to November 20. The company cited "changing business needs."

The third notice was filed in the first week of September. It closes the Newville logistics center on Centerville Road in Cumberland County, in south-central Pennsylvania west of Carlisle and Harrisburg. Layoffs come October 31 and the building closes November 30.

The company is continuing to operate three other Lehigh Valley sites: one in Bethlehem and two in Northampton County, in Plainfield Township and Lower Nazareth Township. It also broke ground in 2024 on a new logistics center in Elwood, Illinois, southwest of Chicago. The three closures look like a consolidation rather than an exit from either market. All three buildings are big-box industrial space, which has leased well in both markets this year.
